Das Leica Summicron-M 50 mmF/2.0 Objektiv ist ein Normalobjektiv, das mit dem Leica M Befestigungssystem an einer geeigneten Kamera montiert wird. Unterstützt werden dabei Modelle von der Leica M1 bis zur M9. Brennweite und Blende sind auf 50 mm F/2.0 festgestellt und lassen sich vom Anwender nicht verändern. Der Fokus wird bei diesem Leica Kameraobjektiv manuell bedient. Bei fest eingestellter Brennweite und Blende von 50 mm F/2.0, könnte der Verdacht aufkommen, dass sich das Leica Summicron-M Objektiv nur für bestimmte Zwecke eignet. Doch trotz der nicht veränderlichen Brennweiten kann das Objektiv in vielen Situationen überzeugen. Gerade für Schnappschüsse, bei denen die Rahmenbedingungen kaum vorherzusehen sind, gelingen mit dem Leica Kameraobjektiv qualitative Bilder in hoher Bildschärfe. Auch Objekte, die sich sehr nah an der Linse befinden, bereiten dem Objektiv kaum Probleme, was in gewissem Maße sogar Makroaufnahmen zulässt. Die größte Stärke des Objektivs liegt aber vor allem in der Porträtfotografie. Personen erscheinen dabei in voller Schärfe, zusätzlich wird der Hintergrund verwischt, um das Motiv noch weiter hervorzuheben. Der Fokus muss dabei manuell eingestellt werden, ein Autofokus befindet sich in diesem Leica Kameraobjektiv nicht. Für einen Fotografen entsteht dadurch jedoch kein Nachteil, die Bedienung per Hand erfolgt sehr schnell und präzise und auch Anfänger erzielen so vorzeigbare Ergebnisse.
