The difference is that when it was shipped to you, it was new. When it arrived, it was damaged. The book was protected by the envelop it was sent in. All our books are shipped the same way, resulting in 99.9% success rate. Usually, when a book arrives damaged, you reach out to the store and ask them to make a claim with the shipper rather than leave negative comments.
