Streetlights reflected off black asphalt as I sped down Sunset Boulevard. Without the sun, the temperature had plummeted, and I was only wearing shorts and a T-shirt. But as I reached to turn up the heat, I realized I had no idea how to do it. The car wasn't mine. I pulled over and scanned the dash until I found the temperature controls. I'd stolen the car several hours earlier and had been so busy zipping around the late-night streets of Los Angeles that I hadn't yet figured out the buttons. But now that the thrill of what I'd done was gone, I just felt cold-cold and detached and impatient. The vents whirred when I found the right button. Hot air rushed through the slats, and I leaned back, grateful to be warm. The dashboard clock clicked to midnight and reminded me I was once again breaking dormitory curfew. I sighed and looked at the ceiling, wondering if I would ever care about the curfew, wondering if I would ever care about anything. The possibility, at least, was entertaining. My mood began to rise along with the temperature. For a few minutes I simply sat there, parked in front of a CVS. On the passenger seat was the car owner's wallet. I grabbed it and chose one of the credit cards inside. Then I got out of the car and walked into the store, warming up again as my next adventure unfolded. It had been six months since I'd left home for college, and nothing was going according to plan.
