In this book the author asserts that, contrary to all the arguments of feminism, it is men who are the subjugated sex. He insists that men are not the powerful sex but the silent sex , the suicide sex . Men have always sacrificed themselves physically and emotionally to feed, house and protect women and children. It has been men who have given up their lives fighting for their country - and men have largely had no choice in the matter. The author maintains that men also do the worst jobs; male illnesses are less well-researched; and men dominate the suicide figures, although none of this is recognised by the feminist rhetoric which influences society and continues to portray men as oppressors and exploiters. Farrell's aim is gender liberation - not to dismantle feminism, but for feminists to recognise that, in many different ways, men have also been oppressed by gender roles and that compassion for men needs to be developed to balance the improvement in women's lot.
