Acerca de este producto

Product Information

Berlin, first settled in 1822 by William Sessions of Gilead, Maine, began as Maynesborough and was incorporated as the town of Berlin in 1829. The invention of the water turbine allowed early residents to harness the immense power of the Androscoggin River, which bisects the town. The arrival of the railroad in 1852 aided the transport of timber and later paper products, helping to give Berlin the nickname the City that Trees Built. Incorporated as a city in 1897, what began as a small town grew until it was, for a time, the world's largest manufacturer of paper products.

Title: Mike Dickerman: Outdoor titles on my Christmas wish list Publication: Foster's Daily Democrat Author: Mike Dickerman Date: 11/30/2008 I'm probably just about the easiest guy to shop for at Christmas time. Whenever my wife (or anyone else for that matter) asks me what I want to find under the tree come Dec. 25, my stock answer is "a pair of nice warm winter socks and a couple of books." Finding the right pair of socks never seems to be a problem for my wife, and she's usually pretty good about picking out just the right book. But just in case there's some doubt about the latter, I try and come up with a list of a dozen or so new books, any of which I'd be happy to receive as a gift. Since books pertaining to the mountains, natural history, and/or New Hampshire and northern New England are generally what I read, my list tends to be pretty weighted toward these subject areas every year. With that in mind, here's a sampling of newly published books that are either on my Christmas wish list this year, or would be if I hadn't already purchased them. Consider this a guide, of sorts, to the best new outdoors books for 2008. Any book list of mine always starts with the White Mountains region of New Hampshire so let's start there, since there are several exceptional new titles to pick from this year. Three new books come immediately to mind. They are "Lost Ski Areas of the White Mountains" by Jeremy K. Davis, "Among the Clouds" by Eric Pinder, and the new second edition of the guide and history, "The 4000-Footers of the White Mountains." "Lost Ski Areas of the White Mountains" is a unique compilation of rare photographs and maps exploring the history of the region's long lost ski slopes. This informative book looks back at the pre-mega resort era of skiing and includes several hundred images from many ski areas that older readers will certainly recognize, at least by name. These include Mittersill (Franconia Notch), Frontenac (Plymouth), Mount Eustis (Littleton) and Grandview Mountain (North Woodstock). "Among the Clouds" is Eric Pinder's second book devoted to life atop Mount Washington as experienced by its year-round summit weather observers. The longtime Berlin resident, who previously penned the popular book, "Life at the Top," was a Mount Washington weather observer himself and knows the mountain and its finicky weather as only a summit weather watcher can. "The 4000-Footers of the White Mountains," co-authored by Steve Smith of Lincoln and yours truly, is an updated and greatly expanded guide to the 48 4,000-foot summits of the region. The book describes all walking routes to the summits, includes a historical time line for each peak, and offers a detailed view guide for every major outlook on each of the 4000-footers. While on the subject of mountains and mountain trails, a few other suggested titles from 2008 that will appeal to New Hampshire outdoor enthusiasts include: –"Haunted Hikes of New Hampshire" by Marianne O'Connor of Nashua. This guide mixes haunting tales with hiking trails and offers up suggestions for more than a dozen spook-filled walks across the Granite State. –"New Hampshire Rail Trails" by Charles F. Martin. This is an exceptional new guide to dozens of recreational rail trails all over New Hampshire. The author's trail descriptions are complemented by more than 90 maps and 180 photographs. –"Mountains for Mortals: New England" by Ron and Nancy Chase. This new illustrated guide describes 30 recommended hikes in the six-state region. –"AMC Best Backpacking in New England" by Matt Heid. In this new guide, explore some of the wildest, least-traveled trails in New England, guided by former AMC Outdoors senior editor Matt Heid. The trips included in the book are rated from "Easy to Epic" and are complemented b
