Acerca de este producto

Product Information

Although part of the Chickasaw Nation, virgin soil lured pioneers into Indian Territory, and by 1900, intruders outnumbered Native Americans 10 to 1, building communities throughout Native American lands. In 1887, on a grassy prairie where buffalo had roamed, men gathered where the Santa Fe Railroad planned to build a station. By 1898, Ardmore was a thriving city with businesses, churches, electricity, and telephones. Under a new federal law in late 1898, Ardmore became an incorporated city. Several disasters including a massive explosion and two major fires almost destroyed the town, but the people who built Ardmore came from sturdy stock. After each disaster, they rebuilt, and Ardmore continued to prosper.

Title: Allen’s book on Ardmore’s history Author: Jennifer Lindsey Publisher: The Daily Ardmoreite Date: 9/29/09 Local author Carlsie Foust Allen explored a new type of writing in her current book, Ardmore.” The book is a part of Arcadia Publishing’s Images in America” series. Just like the other book in the popular series, Ardmore” tells the story of the city through pictures and captions. It was difficult to change from my routine to their routine. Some pictures I could write several pages about, while others it was hard to get enough words,” Allen said. She has written two previous books, both of which show her great interest in Ardmore’s history. As a child she would sit and listen to the adults discuss about the old days.” She wrote these family stories down and they became the basis for her first book, Unexpected Destinies.” I’ve always loved local history. I have tons of things I’ve written down,” Allen said. Then she wrote an historical novel titled Lilac Courage: A Story of Intruders into Pickens County, Indian Territory,” which won the Delta Gamma Kappa Award in 2008. The main characters are fiction, but the events in and around Ardmore are real,” Allen said. Now, Allen uses historical photographs with a limited amount of words to tell the story. Learning how to trim my words down was a lesson in itself,” she said. However, Allen exercised her creativity when deciding what photographs to use and in what order. That’s where my creativity came in. I am fascinated by the intruders ... They came here illegally and set up shop. They had a dream and made it come true,” Allen said. The intruders were people who settled in the Chickasaw Nation illegally during the 1800s. Allen began her research with the Mac McGalliard Collection at the Ardmore Public Library, yet she had a problem as the collection was being moved. I didn’t get in there enough before it was sent away,” Allen said. Then she went to the Ardmore Main Street Authority. Their downtown pictures were a very valuable collection for me,” Allen said. She also went to the Greater Southwest Historical Museum. I did not know they had such a large collection of pictures,” Allen said. She finished her photographic research with the collection of Sally Gray. Allen also used Paul N. Frame’s book A History of Ardmore, Oklahoma, From the Earliest Beginnings to 1907.” I was reading and matching his information with what I was looking at (in the photographs),” Allen said. Allen enjoyed her research, learning the ins and outs of Ardmore history. For example, the Carnegie Library, now the Garden Center, originally had two floors, but the second floor was torn off by a tornado. It’s little snippets like that, that we wouldn’t know otherwise. That part of the research was just wonderful,” she said. Allen called choosing the cover picture the most painful part of the process.” It was the 27th picture I sent in and (editor Ted Gerstle) wrote back that we found the cover. That was a yay day,” Allen said. Despite the challenges, Allen found the process rewarding. It just confirms to me that I want to write history. This is where I live. This is my history and I just want to keep writing,” Allen said. She is thankful to everyone who had a part in creating the book, including the photographers whose photographs include a striking picture taken moments after a railroad tanker exploded in 1915 and killed 43 people. If that photographer had not grabbed his camera and taken that picture,
