Notable for its inclusion of a storybook-style, 80-page instruction manual that provides clues about secrets and hidden areas in the game, Skuljagger is a quirky platformer that has your character, who runs quickly and can jump far, wielding a sword against a slew of pirates and other enemies (including rats and flying ants). There are gems to collect for protection (otherwise it's a one-hit death game), and, curiously enough, there are chewable bubblegum power-ups that provide bombs, flotation, and other items and abilities. The sword fights are fairly enjoyable, the game moves at a nice, breezy pace, the password feature is convenient, and the swashbuckling atmosphere of the game is enhanced by a terrific musical score and fun-to-read text. On the negative side, there are blind jumps into bottomless pits, repetitious enemies and gameplay, and the graphics are merely adequate.
