Will Gluck's intelligent and hilarious high school comedy stars Emma Stone in an outstanding lead performance. Olive Penderghast is something of an 'also ran' in her year at school, so when she spies the opportunity to make herself look a little more interesting and mature she jumps at it and tells a friend that she's lost her virginity to a college boy. However, what was supposed to be a confidential white lie becomes public, and soon she has the cachet of unprecedented notoriety around the entire school. But it's what happens next that's really interesting. Enjoying the glare of attention (despite the brickbats some of her more prudish classmates hurl), she not only sets out to build on her newfound rep as a scarlet woman, she also subverts the moment to help some of the school's more picked-upon students. The film references a host of teen movies, as well as American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1850 work The Scarlet Letter, but ultimately it's the quality of Stone's acting, allied to a very funny script, that makes this such an enjoyable watch.
