The battle of The Somme has become a by-word for the whole Great War. The British army sustained 60, 0000 casualties on the first day of the battle; and at the end six miles had been gained into German-occupied territory. At Verdun, the French army confronted the German army. The German intent was to leave the French army irrecoverably damaged. In the end, both sides suffered huge losses for negligible territorial gain.
