At the height of the Cuban missile crisis in the 1960s, Calvin Webber takes his pregnant wife Helen underground into a cavernous air raid shelter. Misinterpreting a plane crash as war, they spend the next 35 years entombed there. Their son, Adam, is brought up learning foreign languages, dancing, boxing and playing in the astro-turfed 'back yard'.
