Horace Andy has been making outstanding records since the early 1970s, cutting a swath across styles as divergent as roots reggae, dub, dancehall, and trip-hop, but infusing them all with his own inimitable personality. Andy brought his distinctive vocal stylings to a whole new generation of listeners when he joined forces with Massive Attack in the early '90s, heightening his already-impressive profile. FROM THE ROOTS teams the singer with studio wizard (and fellow Massive Attack collaborator) Mad Professor, whose Lee "Scratch" Perry-influenced knob-twiddling creates a burbling, echo-filled landscape that is perfectly suited to Andy's incisive vocal tone and idiosyncratic embellishments. Mad Professor populates the spacious sonic canvas with layered effects, while a superb cadre of musicians (including the legendary Sly & Robbie on drums and bass, respectively) lays down formidable rhythms. Though there are a couple of pop-flavored love songs ("Gimme What Me Want!!"), the majority of the album centers on classic Rastafarian themes, and ranges from mesmerizing head-nodders ("The Bingy Man") to insistent calls for action ("Rise Up Now"). Distinguished from the trip-hop and dancehall-inflected work Andy put out in the '90s, this outing has a deep roots vibe that sounds both classic and contemporary.
