Reviews
Praise for Noel Perrin and his Person Rural series "No writer since E.B. White can make puttering around a small farm sound more satisfying... Perrin is always deft, droll, and thoroughly civilized."-- Washington Post Book World "This is a dangerous book. It almost made me decide to go ahead and get pigs."--Roy Blount, Jr. New York Times Book Review "For those of us who have no particular desire to pick up and move to the country, these essays are an excellent way to get a taste of what it's all about... Like the maul with which he splits his winter wood supply, his prose is finely sharpened and wielded with great precision, and it strikes in just the proper place.-- Christian Science Monitor "You have to admire how Perrin lets the language break down into little fragments, hard stones left by a receding glacier. It isn't easy to talk about the soul, and New Englanders have as hard a time as anyone. Perrin's writing mirrors that difficulty, that ingrained reticence."--Alex Hanson, Valley News

Synopsis
The best personal and environmental essays of the late Dartmouth professor turned Vermont farmer, including many uncollected pieces., In 1963, Noel Perrin, a 35-year-old professor of English at Dartmouth College, bought an 85-acre farm in Thetford Center, Vermont. For the next forty years he spent half his time teaching, half writing, and half farming. "That this adds up to three halves I am all too aware," he said, sounding a characteristic, self-deprecating note of bittersweet amusement at the chalk on his coat, the sweat on his brow, and the mud (and worse) on his boots. "I love this farm," he wrote shortly before his death in 2004, "every acre of it. The maples, the apple trees, the cattle, the wild turkeys. I love the brick farmhouse, which I believe to be about 190 years old ... and the two barns. I love the view from the kitchen window ... and the grander view to be had if you climb Bill Hill, the farm's in-house mini-mountain. The thing that delights me most, though, is that the farm really is a farm. It produces a little food every year, and most years a little fuel as well." It also produced four volumes of essays, beginning with First Person Rural (1978). Some of Perrin's pieces are practical (how to build a stone wall), others philosophical (why to build a stone wall). One pretends to be about amateur sugar making, but it is really a metaphor for reality and illusion. Another pretends to be about the country as a retreat, but is really about the country as a place to meet the world head-on. One is a dangerous character sketch of a sow - dangerous, because as Roy Blount said after reading it, "It almost made me decide to go ahead and get pigs." In short, these essays are as good as the literature of farming gets. Best Person Rural is a harvest feast, bringing together twenty of Perrin's best-loved pieces and five previously uncollected items, including his moving "Farewell to a Thetford Farm."

I did message buyer asking about mold and didn't receive a reply -- luckily, there appears to be no mold. Great value for a 100+ yr old book!
- a***p (8)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Últimos 6 mesesCompra verificadaI received my book in absolutely pristine condition, better than described! Which is impressive because the copy is from 1930 and it looks like it has never been handled. It shipped very quickly, even faster than the estimated time given by a week. It was packaged very carefully. The book and shipping price was also very fair considering the age and condition of the book and the shipping speed. I am very pleased with this seller and will be ordering from them again in the future.
- 5***8 (18)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Últimos 6 mesesCompra verificadaI am always a little nervous when ordering books off of eBay but this seller has provided me with an EXCELLENT purchasing experience! The packaging was superior and I am grateful because this is a signed first edition and we all know how the post office can be at times. The Shipping was timely and the item actually arrived quicker than expected. The item EXCEEDED the description. It is stunning. I have dropped it off at my antiquarian for authors signature verification but the value is high. What Negro Wants by Rayford W Logan 1944 (HC/DJ) (#335500668720)
