NotesKelly Callahan's rootsy indie music appeals to the artistic spirits carried over from the sixties and seventies. If you are a listener who hates to hear spoken words in place of sung lyrics overtop music, allow yourself to get past the first track. I'm glad I did. Because there were beautiful surprises just beyond 'The Road.' A very early Natalie Merchant-esque quality (without the British accent) greeted me in the very freeing 'Motion.' The disc continues with soulful 'Coming Home' and reflective 'Beautiful.' Callahan's The Road is receiving airtime in several US states and Belgium. This is a very honest, artistic collection of really great folk music by a talented newcomer. The music maintains it's roots musically and explores the modern experience lyrically. She has been compared to Natalie Merchant, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emma Lou Harris, Sarah Maclaughlin, Edie Brickell and Joni Mitchell. Her musical influences are John Denver, Joni Mitchell, Indigo Girls and Bob Dylan. Kelly also teaches Yoga and Pilates and acting to kids. She lives in California.
