"Why did you choose to play the harp?" The short answer to that often asked question is "Joy." Let me start at the beginning. When I was eight, I asked my surprised parents if I could play the harp. Eleven years later, I own four harps of different sizes and am making my first CD with my own hymn arrangements. For this album, I used my largest harp, a 42 string Lyon and Healy 85 Petite pedal harp. By age fourteen, I was building a harp business with my parents' help. I continue to play at weddings, events, churches, orchestras and at senior facilities. My father taught me how to design a website while my mother continues to be my manager, chauffeur and roady. This dual coarse in music and entrepreneurship was also part of my school- I've been home educated my entire life. Now I am a distance learning college student pursuing a degree in writing. Performing harp has given me opportunities to interact with people and to share the joy of music-especially hymns. In senior facilities, I have been asked to play for the dying, which prompted my arrangement for "Blessed Assurance." Often, an Alzheimer's patient who can't tell me her name will sing along to "Amazing Grace." Hymns come up most often in my harp programs, an hour of entertainment where between songs I talk about the music, about the harp and about Jesus. While performing and arranging music for these settings, I realized I am a word painter. In writing I paint with words, but I also express the meaning of words in other mediums such as visual art and music. In each of the original arrangements on this CD, I attempted to depict the hymn lyrics through instrumental harp. For example, the second verse of "How Great Thou Art" describes the suffering of Jesus. For that part, I moved the melody into a minor mode with a Jewish feel. That is word painting. To further enjoy the music, I encourage you to look up the lyrics for all the hymns on this disk, available at my website: annahagenharpist.com. Why do I play the harp? Playing music and expressing meaning gives me joy. When I perform, I can see the joy it gives others. The title of this CD comes from the chorus of "I Come to the Garden:" "And the joy we share as we tarry there." I hope that this CD allows you to share that joy, the joy I have playing and performing harp-the joy of being with Jesus.
