Dark joined the Marine Corps. It was the height of the Vietnam War, and Dark was assigned to one of the most decorated marine companies to be deployed there, the Fox Company, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines. Death, shock, and misery were inevitable, and Dark, a carefree young man when he had entered the service, soon was transformed into a hardened soldier. This gripping and personal memoir provides a revealing look at the true agonies of war. With clarity and emotion, Dark recounts firefight in the notoriously dangerous Arizona Territory, humping through the swampy jungles, developing a deep sense of brotherhood and friendship with his fellow soldiers, and watching many of those same comrades die in combat. While Dark did find solace in surrendering his fate to God on the battlefield, it took him many years to come to find peace with his experiences.
