Reviews"But thanks to Tim Goeglein, who served as a Republican staffer in the U.S. Congress and the White House of George W. Bush, younger Americans can grasp the significance of the explosive era when their Baby Boomer elders came of age. In his fittingly titled Stumbling Toward Utopia, the vice president of Focus on the Family assesses the 'cultural earthquake' of the 1960s while tracing the 'old fault lines' that continue to wreak havoc."-- Modern Age Journal, "In this short but important book, Goeglein identifies the progressive culprits whose ideas led to the radical transformation of America's culture."-- Francis P. Sempa, New York Journal of Books "Some readers will likely regard "Stumbling Toward Utopia" as one more conservative manifesto of complaint against the state of today's culture. Goeglein's book is a complaint, yes, and a fierce one. SynopsisAccording to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, "in 1516, English humanist Sir Thomas More published a book titled Utopia, which compared social and economic conditions in Europe with those of an ideal society on an imaginary island located off the coast of the Americas. More wanted to imply that the perfect conditions on his fictional island could never really exist, so he called it "Utopia," a name he created by combining the Greek words ou ("not, no") and topos ("place"). The current use of Utopia, referring to an ideal place or society, was inspired by More's description of Utopia's perfection. Utopia refers to an imaginary community or society that possesses highly desirable or near-perfect qualities for its members. For centuries since More first coined the word, humanity has sought to create their own Utopias where everything, in human understanding, would be perfect-a heaven on earth. Everyone would get along-there would be no poverty, no war, no conflict of any kind. It is a desire we all have because we are created imago Dei-in the image of God-and thus yearn for such a place. Unfortunately, all man's attempts to create a Utopian society have been abject failures because they are based on man's efforts, instead of submission to God's authority. Only in heaven is such a Utopia a reality. However, we can stop and reverse the destruction done to our society, and Stumbling toward Utopia shows us the way., In Stumbling toward Utopia, author Tim Goeglein looks at the philosophies and policies that led to the societal earthquake of the1960s and how those philosophies and policies have led to the cataclysm America faces today. He offers a blueprint for how we can reject those philosophies and policies by returning to the core values upon which America was built: personal responsibility, respect for life, sexual restraint, and patriotism.
