Reviews
I have known my friend David Tomberlin for almost two decades. I love his heart and complete dedication to bring the gospel to millions in the nations and his tenacity in pursuing the truth. I trust that as you read this book, you will be encouraged to embrace the truth, which, in turn, will cause you to know Jesus--the way, the truth, and the life--even better, more deeply, and more closely than ever before., This book rightly divides the Word of truth about grace and addresses the error of "cheap grace" that has become rampant in the American church., The devil is a counterfeit artist who has distorted the biblical understanding of grace. If you miss the true meaning of grace, you will miss the doorway into God's supernatural and fall into serious error!, I stand with David Tomberlin and his understanding of grace in his new book, Grace Is Free, But It Isn't Cheap. It is a much-needed additional voice to the cheap grace that Dietrich Bonhoeffer warned the church about in the 1940s while in prison before Hitler executed him for his involvement in the resistance. We need modern writers reminding us of the cost of discipleship , as Bonhoeffer did. Thank you, David, for reminding us of the dangers of the cheap-grace message.

Synopsis
Pastor David Tomberlin explains the difference between true, saving grace and counterfeit versions in Grace Is Free, But It Isn't Cheap: Challenging Today's Watered Down Version of Christianity., When Jesus walked the earth, rather than expressing anger toward cheating tax collectors and prostitutes, He gently urged them to walk away from their sins. Jesus saved His wrath for the hypocritical Pharisees who pretended to offer grace but only demanded adherence to their endless rules. Today, Pastor David Tomberlin says, some preachers offer another kind of grace that's just as damaging--a cheap, "greasy" grace that says there's no need to repent because Jesus paid for all of our sins on the cross. "Fake, cheap, greasy grace doesn't transform," he says. "It doesn't set the captive free; it pats the captive on the back reassuringly on his road to destruction. Therefore, those ensnared in sin stay stuck while heaps of feel-good words pile on them." In Grace Is Free, But It Isn't Cheap: Challenging Today's Watered Down Version of Christianity , Tomberlin takes up the clarion call once voiced by Dietrich Bonhoeffer for believers to appreciate the high cost Christ paid for the salvation of humankind and pursue a life of following Him. This pursuit requires a true appreciation of the cost of grace and a nuanced understanding of the dynamics of liberty and accountability. "The greasy grace movement tries to represent God without actually knowing Him," Tomberlin says. "True grace, lavish grace, doesn't tell someone they are okay when they aren't; it empowers them to overcome their sin and get truly free." Claim your inheritance as a beloved child of the King, and discover what it really means to follow Christ., When Jesus walked the earth, rather than expressing anger toward cheating tax collectors and prostitutes, He gently urged them to walk away from their sins. "The snowflake gospel," This age-old, misleading theology goes by many names, but, in the end, it's all the same. Decades ago, The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer called out the Christian church for this troubling trend: the preaching of a gospel of "cheap grace" that talks about forgiveness but fails to appreciate the high cost Christ paid for the salvation of humankind. Today's church stands in need of a similar wake-up call. In this book, Dr. David Tomberlin picks up Bonhoeffer's refrain, calling believers to progress past the point of confessing Christ to pursue a life of earnestly following Him. This pursuit requires a true appreciation of the dynamics of both liberty and accountability. Tomberlin provides a clear, compelling illustration of "greasy grace," in all its feel-good glory, and contrasts it with the treasure of true grace. Grace is a priceless gift-one we can't afford to cheapen with messages that exaggerate personal freedom while minimizing our responsibility toward God and others. Claim your inheritance as a beloved child of the King, and discover what it really means to be a follower of Christ. Book jacket.
