Never have so many in the press been so wrong so often about an election. "Trump has a better chance of cameoing in another Home Alone movie with Macaulay Culkin -- or playing in the NBA Finals -- than winning the Republican nomination," wrote Harry Enten of FiveThirtyEight Politics on June 16, 2015, the day Trump formally entered the race. "Nobody's going to mistake Donald Trump for a presidential candidate, I don't think, other than Donald Trump," Chuck Todd said on his Meet the Press show on NBC. "Donald Trump has a long record of clownishly pretending he's going to run for president, and people take him seriously -- including a lot of people at this network, which drives me crazy. I think Donald Trump is a bane of humanity," Jonah Goldberg of the National Review said on Fox News. The experts said he lost every debate, and wrote him off after every gaffe. But the voters had the final say. David French of the National Review was among those who finally saw the power of the people. "I'll never forget the moment I understood the true depth of support for Trump. My wife's uncle died weeks before the first primary. At his funeral, the pastor said that one of his greatest regrets is that he knew he would pass away before he had a chance to vote for Donald Trump. I've never heard that said of any candidate, much less a man so unworthy of such devotion. But he was following his leader. No one else had stepped up to earn his trust," French wrote just before Trump sealed the nomination. Trump the Press celebrates the people's rise against the elites who consistently got the election wrong. Chapter 6, "Peak Trump," is a delightful recollection of all the times the experts said Trump's candidacy had peaked, and that it was all downhill from there. "Trump had more peaks than the Himalayas," Surber wrote.
