Reviews
In this charmed feat of imagination and learning , the beauties and disasters of Mary Stuart's life unfold again, and her nimble brain and fingers are alive. It is a personal project, with the flavour of a memoir, but dense with fascinating information that the less inspired might miss. Clare Hunter is at ease in this glittering, alien world, and moves through it as a woman, with Mary's 'joyouestie' in mind as well as her suffering. Select praise for THREADS OF LIFE: Triumphant - Mail on SundayAn inspiring and moving sideways look at history - Sunday ExpressAstonishing . . . so well written - Times Literary SupplementA beautifully considered book . . .Clare Hunter has managed to mix the personal with the political with moving results'

Synopsis
I felt that Mary was there, pulling at my sleeve, willing me to appreciate the artistry, wanting me to understand the dazzle of the material world that shaped her. At her execution Mary, Queen of Scots wore red. Widely known as the colour of strength and passion, it was in fact worn by Mary as the Catholic symbol of martyrdom. In sixteenth-century Europe women's voices were suppressed and silenced. Even for a queen like Mary, her prime duty was to bear sons. In an age when textiles expressed power, Mary exploited them to emphasise her female agency. From her lavishly embroidered gowns as the prospective wife of the French Dauphin to the fashion dolls she used to encourage a Marian style at the Scottish court and the subversive messages she embroidered in captivity for her supporters, Mary used textiles to advance her political agenda, affirm her royal lineage and tell her own story. In this eloquent cultural biography, Clare Hunter exquisitely blends history, politics and memoir to tell the story of a queen in her own voice. '[A] charmed feat of imagination and learning' HILARY MANTEL, In sixteenth-century Europe women's voices were suppressed and silenced, and despite her royal position Mary, Queen of Scots was no exception. But, in an age when textiles expressed power, Mary exploited them to emphasise her female agency. From the extravagant gowns made for her as the prospective wife of the French Dauphin, and the dolls she used to rehearse her public appearances as Scotland's queen, to the embroideries she made to smuggle subversive messages to her supporters, throughout her life Mary used textiles to advance her political agenda and tell her personal story. In this eloquent cultural biography, Clare Hunter exquisitely blends history, politics and memoir to illuminate the experiences and emotions of Mary, Queen of Scots through the prism of her textiles and reveal new insights into the Scottish-queen's life and times., I felt that Mary was there, pulling at my sleeve, willing me to appreciate the artistry, wanting me to understand the dazzle of the material world that shaped her. Arrived quickly & safely! Got a great deal on it! Great communication! The book, with a protective mylar cover, was wrapped in bubble wrap, then wrapped in sturdy cardboard, then placed in a rugged bubble mailer! Fort Knox in a mailer! So hard to get an early edition of this classic! So happy to add to my growing collection of nature & science books! Thank you! !!Seller Highly Recommended!!
- 6***6 (74)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Mes pasadoCompra verificadaThis delivery was earliest date! Condition, value, quality - all as described. (My mistake was not requiring the publishing date to be 1958. This was 1977.) This IS a Viking Portable Library copy of Dante's Divine Comedy in English, translated by Laurence Binyon, but it is with a cover DIFFERENT from what was shown. The tracking number was listed as from "UPS", but should have been listed as from "USPS." Contact with this seller alleviated tracking issues. I recommend this seller! Thank you!
