"For those planning to...enjoy many fine celestial vistas, there is no better guide than Stephen O'Meara's book. For each object, a photograph, a finder chart, basic data and a quote from Messier's accounts are provided, with a discussion of what is seen through small telescopes, and some history of telescopic studies." Nature, ‘The book is well printed on heavy paper and both drawings and most of the photographs appear to have reproduced well. … I think this is an excellent book and a worthy replacement for The Messier Album and deserves a place on the bookshelf of both the novice and experienced amateur astronomer.’Owen Brazell, Webb Society Quarterly Journal, "This delightful observing companion by veteran astronomical observer, photographer, and writer O'Meara summarizes the basics of observing (including definitions, concepts, and sky descriptions), and methods and equipment involved...amateur observers...will find this book to be exceptionally useful because it also gives one of the best approaches to observing. Coordinates, size and brightness, distance, excellent description, finding chart, photograph, and a drawing are listed for each object....Highly recommended." Synopsis
The Messier Guide for the modern age. Exquisite and highly detailed drawings made from the darkest skies on Earth are combined with a thoroughly modern text in this ultimate field guide to the finest galaxies, clusters and nebulae., The 110 galaxies, star clusters and nebulae catalogued by the comet hunter Charles Messier in the late 1700s are still the most widely observed celestial wonders in the heavens. They are the favourite targets of amateur astronomers, with such rich variety and detail that they never cease to fascinate. This book provides new and experienced observers with a fresh perspective on the Messier objects. Stephen James O'Meara has prepared a visual feast for the observer. Using the finest optical telescopes available for amateur work, superior eyepieces and the darkest site on Earth, he describes and sketches the view from the telescope as never before. There are new drawings, improved finder charts, and new astronomical data on each object, including findings from the Hubble Space Telescope. This is truly the Messier Guide for the modern age., If there were a canon for viewing the night sky, Charles Messier would be its author. The galaxies, star clusters, and nebulae cataloged by the famous comet hunter in the late 1700s are still the most widely observed celestial wonders in the heavens. 1st edition, 2nd impression edition of "The Drunken Forest," by Gerald Durrell is as pictured & described. Arrived quickly & safely! Got a great deal on it! Great communication! The book, with a protective mylar cover, was wrapped in bubble wrap, then wrapped in sturdy cardboard, then placed in a rugged bubble mailer! Fort Knox in a mailer! So hard to get an early edition of this classic! So happy to add to my growing collection of nature & science books! Thank you! !!Seller Highly Recommended!!

Book was well protected, shipped via book class, eventually arrived. In condition as described by seller, unfortunately there was a binding error during printing that was missed (15 pages were replaced with a duplicate 15 pages from another section) when informed vender checked inventory, no other identical books so they offered an alternate rare antique book but the book I was interested in at half the price was common so the seller refunded me the purchase price instead. Great seller.
