It's STEM Friday. Join us to see more great FALL books. "Fall is the season of change. Everything gets ready for winter. In the Northern Hemisphere, the first day of fall, or autumn, is September 22 or 23." Exploring Fall includes information about the seasons and where fall fits in, light, water, trees, animals, people, and fall in the different hemispheres. The short narrative text introduces the photograph on the opposite spread. The book has a glossary, a read more section, internet sites, and an index. It holds 225 words and is at a grade 1 reading level. This series is a perfect way to introduce the seasons, especially with school having started. It works well with the Common Core by extending fall facts to how other things in their world relate to fall. It's a lovely book and a great way to kick off autumn, a study of the seasons, or predictable changes in the environment. Activity 1 Make a list of all the topics from the book that are connected to fall. Discuss how each kind of life or event is affected by fall. Illustrate the list to show the changes that take place. Activity 2 Before reading the book, introduce the title. Then show the pictures without revealing the text. Discuss what kinds of information each picture provides. Make a list on the board or chart for each picture. Then read the text. Talk about what each part of the book gave in the way of information. National Science Standard: weather and climate Common Core: grade 1 - Reading Standards for Informational Text 3. Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text. 6. Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text. Sooner or later, they will seek the books on seasons. I will be ready. Crisp and attractive photographs, single-page "chapters," minimal text in simple font, a pleasing buttery yellow color, and a generous 11" x 9" size, are the hallmarks of this Exploring the Seasons series. Each book contains eight chapters. The first is specific to a season ("Season of Change" for fall, "Hot, Hot, Hot" for summer), and the rest follow a predictable pattern ("What Causes Seasons?," "Water in Fall," People in Fall," etc.) The text is simple and easy to follow: "Lakes and ponds get cold in fall. But oceans have built up warmth over the summer. The warm water makes hurricanes more common in fall;" and is accompanied on the facing page by a full, or larger-than-full page photograph or illustration. With enough scientific data to cover necessary standards, the Exploring the Seasons series is nevertheless, attractive enough to appeal to young readers or listeners. Because Capstone Press' target audience is beginning, struggling and reluctant readers, these books have a target age range of 5-7, but will be equally useful as preschool read-alouds to accompany storybooks on the same topic., The air is changing just a bit, giving us a hint that fall might be coming. What better way to get into the mood for autumn than reading a beautiful nonfiction picture book like Exploring Fall by Terri DeGezelle? Part of the Exploring the Seasons series, this book features full page color photographs and illustrations matched with simple, controlled text. The book answers all the questions about the upcoming season a child might ask, including when does it start, why does it happen, and what changes to expect. It even mentions why we might expect more hurricanes to occur in the fall! Exploring Fall by Terri DeGezelle is an obvious choice for a fall theme collection. Consider it for units on seasons and weather as well. Activity: Inspired by A Tree Grower's Diary: Take a photograph or draw a picture of the same tree once or twice a week from the same position and see how the colors change. (For adults and older children to share with younger children).
