"Not only is this book filled with breathtaking imagery, commentary is included to get a better glimpse into the creative process of one of the most original artists of our time." ~ZinkeMagazine "[H]er eponymous new book is anything but simplistic; Shirin Neshat chronicles the artist's exploration of complex themes such as exile and the role of gender within Islam. " ~National Public Radio [A] handsome and provocative monograph...a powerful and moving group of artistic snapshots that undoubtedly will make readers interested in viewing the original film and video works in their transcendent and spiritually absolute glory." ~Fest21.com "Shirin Neshat's work has never been afraid of tackling the binaries pulling us in opposite directions, whether they be tensions between East and West, men and women, faith and reason." ~FlavorPill.com, "Not only is this book filled with breathtaking imagery, commentary is included to get a better glimpse into the creative process of one of the most original artists of our time." ~ Zinke Magazine "[H]er eponymous new book is anything but simplistic; Shirin Neshat chronicles the artist's exploration of complex themes such as exile and the role of gender within Islam. Synopsis
Internationally acclaimed photographer, videographer, and filmmaker Shirin Neshat first came to prominence in the mid-1990s when she exhibited her series the Women of Allah , an extraordinary body of work exploring women in Islamic culture. Since then, the Iranian-born artist has continued to explore difficult subjects: the boundaries between East and West, men and women, the sacred and the profane, exile and belonging. Her work is marked by its graphic boldness and stirring imagery: photographs of women cloaked in black veils with excerpts of Farsi poetry inscribed across the surface; videos of clans of men and women in barren landscapes chanting or groups of men and women listening to rousing moralistic sermons in a public hall; and, as in her most recent projects, magical realist works in which women fly or plant themselves in gardens to ensure their fertility. Renowned art critic and historian Arthur C. Danto explores the entirety of the artist's rich and varied oeuvre, from the earliest photographs to her latest work, the film Women Without Men. Her first feature film, for which she was awarded the prestigious Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival, is based on the novella of the same name that was banned in Iran; it has taken nearly seven years to complete. In addition to the important essay by Danto, the book includes a foreword in the form of a letter by artist Marina Abramovic and commentaries for each series of work by Neshat herself, allowing a glimpse into the creative process of one of the most unique artists of her time.

- o***r (606)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Últimos 6 mesesCompra verificadaThis was one satisfying purchase. I ordered a heavy, rather large-sized used book. Delivery was from the US to Germany. The book arrived today, without any trouble, after slightly less than two weeks (which is good average) in exactly the same condition as described, well-packed and also well-fixed within the package. (Which is rare these days, even with brand new books sent by large commercial retailers.) I am quite delighted. Based on this purchase I highly recommend this seller. Thank you!!
- 4***9 (109)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Mes pasadoCompra verificadaIt is hard to find a decent online book seller, so I was very impressed with my experience. Item was reasonably priced, new as described, shipping was priced fairly and fast, and most notable the book was packaged properly for shipment (secured to card backing to prevent damage in transit). Great experience!
- d***y (531)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Último añoCompra verificadaBeautiful book exactly as described. Shipping was lightening FAST. Wonderful seller who answered the questions I had immediately (on a Sunday) and took the time to send me a picture for more detailed information. The book was expertly packed and taped extra good since the book was heavy. The extra care in packing such a heavy book was greatly appreciated. Seller had the book priced at a bargain and I was thankful for the opportunity to purchase it. I highly recommend this seller. AAAA++++++.Henry County Ohio Volume One (#134104032584)
