The Fayum district was home to diverse populations of Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Syrians, Libyans, Nubians, and Jews. In the old Egyptian tradition, they and their contemporaries in settlements in the Nile valley embalmed the bodies of their dead and then placed over the mummified person a painted portrait, preserving the memories of these individuals to an uncanny degree. Almost 200 of these portraits are shown here, accompanied by commentaries on their social, cultural and religious contexts, with analysis of materials and techniques.
