The old start thermistor (which is inside the brown part in this kit) was broken and was preventing the compressor from starting. The original overload protection device (also included in this kit) was fine as it could be heard clicking at regular intervals as it cycled the power to the compressor on and off to prevent the windings in the compressor from getting damaged from the excessive current and heat.
