My husband 5'8" 135lb wears medium smartwool shirts like these and this small is even wider. We gave the mediums away, fit like a large. Given this is an underlayer, we expected form fitting from the size chart not loose like a sweater for casual wear. But if you size down, these are great value.

I'd say this is a lightweight wool baselayer, so It can easily be worn underneath other gear, but looks good by itself too.
