Introduction; 1. Culture in the American grain; 2. Social class in the ethnography of the American scene; 3. The psychology of culture and the American character; 4. The drift of American values; 5. America as a civilization.
Synopsis
This book examines the intersection of cultural anthropology and American cultural nationalism from 1886, when Franz Boas left Germany for the United States, until 1965, when the National Endowment for the Humanities was established. Five chapters trace the development within academic anthropology of the concepts of culture, social class, national character, value, and civilization, and their dissemination to non-anthropologists. As Americans came to think of culture anthropologically, as a "complex whole" far broader and more inclusive than Matthew Arnold's "the best which has been thought and said," so, too, did they come to see American communities as stratified into social classes distinguished by their subcultures; to attribute the making of the American character to socialization rather than birth; to locate the distinctiveness of American culture in its unconscious canons of choice; and to view American culture and civilization in a global perspective., This book is about how a small group of anthropologists shaped American thought from the late nineteenth century until the mid-1960s. They did so through democratizing the American conception of culture, putting class analysis on the agenda, rehabilitating the American character, studying American values scientifically, and reconciling culture and civilization., This book examines the intersection of cultural anthropology and American cultural nationalism from 1886, when Franz Boas left Germany for the United States, until 1965, when the National Endowment for the Humanities was established. Was unable to contact the seller to resolve my issue (eBay message “that page is not available”). Prior to buying I asked this seller if this was a remainder and reply was they did not know what that meant. I clearly explained what it meant. The seller stated in their message “they witnessed no such sign of it being a remainder”) item arrived and sure enough it is a remainder - the only photo not in the original listing would have identified that. Will not use again or recommend this seller.

I really cannot believe that you have the gall to leave me Negative feedback after all i did to assist and help you. I patiently answered ALL your questions and all your inquiries prior to your purchasing the book, and was 1000% honest about everything. I did absolutely EVERYTHING I could to assist and help you; and the next thing i know, you have left me negative feedback. Shame! Some people simply cannot be pleased, no matter what you do or how hard you try.
