CITY RHYTHM STRIKES AGAIN Here we go again. When the City Rhythm guys decide to do something, they invariably get carried away, and it's hard to avoid being swept up by their enthusiasm...unless you want to get run over! Their live performances just don't quit. Whether it's in an intimate smoky bar, a packed dance hall, or an outdoor festival with thousands, these guys simply 'take over.' The horns, the feel, the vocals...the volume! They not only work a lot, they work hard. Someone recently reminded Nick and Pete that just because they carry hundreds of swing tunes in the 'book' doesn't mean they have to play them all at every gig! Of course, Joe Matt's no help. He just keeps writing more charts that everyone wants to hear, having been arranging for the band since it's inception in 1985. This record date developed in typical City Rhythm style. What started as a simple project to 'cut a few sides' soon turned into a mammoth effort with lots of new tunes, new arrangements and tons of energy totaling 17 killer tracks. The band swings like mad while Steve and Vicki deliver dynamite vocals! Of course, lots of fun was had in the process. Recording inside a studio near Broadway wasn't enough, the band had to do some playing between sessions right on Broadway...although the guys will tell you that the late night jams on Times Square were purely part of a social minded agenda to draw attention to the plight of the New York street musician. The marvelous thing about this disc is that it captures the sound, excitement and delight that this group has been generating 'live' for so long. Sit back (if you can) and listen to an hour of great swing music 'the way City Rhythm does it.' The Philadelphia Inquirer calls them 'Philly's premier swing outfit' and anyone familiar with this group would certainly agree. Their 1,000-tune play list is filled with swingin' jazz arrangements, rockin' blues tunes, unique original material, and vintage big band charts. A music critic once wrote that hearing a set by City Rhythm was 'great music and great fun'. That just about sums up the results that saxophonists Pete Spina and Nick Vallerio had in mind when they formed the band, and they have consistently cooked up exciting music with their key ingredients of hot horn players, a smokin' rhythm section, innovative arrangements, and dynamite vocals. Mix all of this with the enthusiasm of the band members and you've got that unmistakable City Rhythm sound that packs every performance with wallop and distinguishes this group from others. The band's arranger, Joe Matt, writes with a flair that keeps the music fresh and the listener on the edge of his seat.
