Synopsis
An authoritative new history and analysis of the Wright Brothers' pioneering aircraft, from their triumph in 1903, through their string of achievements in the next decade, to their eclipse in the 1910s. Orville and Wilbur Wright, two bicycle-making brothers from Dayton, Ohio, secured their place as the most famous names in aviation history when, on December 17, 1903, they made the first powered, controlled, and sustained heavier-than-air flight. But their success over the cold and windswept Carolina dunes that day has overshadowed their many other accomplishments before and after that historic flight. The Wrights' progression from theory to analysis to ground-testing components and wing shapes, and to then flight-testing kites, gliders, and their first powered aeroplane, marked the world's first successful "X-Plane" research and development program. They established a template all subsequent aircraft have followed, one still relevant in the era of hypersonic flight and drone research. This book traces the Wright Brothers' story, from their first success on that cold December day throughout their glory years to their eventual eclipse by other aviators. It explores in detail the process that lead them to their pioneering craft and their many subsequent achievements over the following years, and highlights their enduring importance in the age of modern flight., Orville and Wilbur Wright did not just invent the airplane. They were aeronautical engineers before the field existed. They researched, developed, tested, and evaluated sub-scale technology demonstrators such as airfoil models, kites, and gliders. They built and used test rigs and a wind tunnel. The brothers did not just give the world flight, they gave aero engineers a model of how to design and test aircraft. After 1903, the "firsts" continued. The Wrights' were the first airplanes to be fully maneuverable, to carry a passenger, to fire a machine gun, to cross the United States. The first production aircraft was a Wright, as was the world's first military aircraft - of the US Signal Corps. On tours of Europe the Wrights wowed the crowds. But the limitations of their chain-driven canard pusher design soon told. By the 1910s the future clearly lay in tractor aircraft, and by World War I, the Wright era was over. This is a fascinating history of the Wrights, their work, and their aircraft, by one of the world's authorities on early flight. Throughout the last century, one-off experimental aircraft and cutting-edge military prototypes have pushed the boundaries of what is possible. Authoritative and accessible, X-Planes is the series that explains the technology behind the world's most important prototype and research aircraft, their often dangerous flight-test careers, and how their successes and failures influenced frontline aircraft development. Each Book Contains: The best archive photography, Meticulously detailed original artwork, Expert history and analysis Book jacket., An authoritative new history and analysis of the Wright Brothers' pioneering aircraft, from their triumph in 1903, through their string of achievements in the next decade, to their eclipse in the 1910s.

Shipping was quick, packaging was excellent, condition was acceptable as described -- binding loose but pages intact. I did message buyer asking about mold and didn't receive a reply -- luckily, there appears to be no mold. Great value for a 100+ yr old book!

I received my book in absolutely pristine condition, better than described! Which is impressive because the copy is from 1930 and it looks like it has never been handled. It shipped very quickly, even faster than the estimated time given by a week. It was packaged very carefully. The book and shipping price was also very fair considering the age and condition of the book and the shipping speed. I am very pleased with this seller and will be ordering from them again in the future.
