Synopsis
This volume sets out an environmental strategy for the World Bank Group in the energy sector for developing countries., Energy is basic to development. People in developing countries attach a high priority to energy services, spending nearly 12 per cent of income on energy, more than five times the average for people in OECD countries. Yet provision of those services can have adverse environmental effects, especially as developing countries are often forced to rely on the most inefficient and polluting sources of energy. This report sets out the challenge arising from growth in energy demand and its impact on the environment; analyses the World Bank's current policies and strategy; outlines a new strategy; and explains how it could be implemented., Despite sustained improvements in its social and economic indicators over the past several decades and its rich stock of natural and human resources, Colombia remains plagued by violence. The very high level of violence reflects a variety of factors, including the country's simmering 50-year-old civil war, the increase in armed conflict, the rise in urban and rural crime, and drug cartel-linked violence. As the government struggles to reach peace agreements with guerilla and paramilitary groups, political violence and armed conflict have been the primary focuses of political analysts and civil society groups alike. The perceptions of violence by people living in poor communities have received much less attention. This report addresses the issue by providing the results of a participatory study of violence conducted in low-income urban communities in Colombia., 'Energy is vital to economic development. Without the fuels that power cars, trains, and planes, and without electricity, light, and heating, life in industrialized countries would be considerably less comfortable. In developing countries, it is not just a question of comfort. Poverty will not be reduced without greater use of modern forms of energy.' Energy is basic to development. On the individual level, modern energy services can transform peoples' lives for the better. On the national level for developing countries, it is impossible to progress beyond a subsistence economy without ensuring at least minimum access to energy services for a broad section of the population. How to meet the increasing energy demands without damaging the environment further, however, is a matter of urgency. This volume sets out an environmental strategy for the World Bank Group in the energy sector for developing countries. The book is organized in four sections: Section 1. Sets out the challenge arising from worldwide growth in energy demand and its potential environmental impacts. Section 2. Reviews the World Bank Group's existing policies, strategy, and record. Section 3. Outlines the new strategy, which contains both existing and fresh elements. Section 4. Explains in more detail how the new elements of the strategy will be implemented.

Shipping was quick, packaging was excellent, condition was acceptable as described -- binding loose but pages intact. I did message buyer asking about mold and didn't receive a reply -- luckily, there appears to be no mold. Great value for a 100+ yr old book!

I received my book in absolutely pristine condition, better than described! Which is impressive because the copy is from 1930 and it looks like it has never been handled. It shipped very quickly, even faster than the estimated time given by a week. It was packaged very carefully. The book and shipping price was also very fair considering the age and condition of the book and the shipping speed. I am very pleased with this seller and will be ordering from them again in the future.
