Arthur Russell's mercurial compositions as a disco producer brought abstract music to the dance floors. Coming of age in the 1970s as a gay man, Russell crossed paths with many of the decade's burgeoning art movements, developing friendships with both Allen Ginsberg and Philip Glass. Reclusive and often self-sabotaging, Russell made music that defied categorization and which, beneath the fog of echo and stuttering drumbeats, was often startlingly personal. This documentary is an engrossing tribute to his life and art.
