Japanese porcelain played an important role in the decorative schemes of European palaces and country houses in the second half of the 17th century, the continuation of which is felt to this day. Japanese porcelain was imported into Europe from the end of the 1650s until the late 1730s - the period covered in this catalog. The Ashmolean Museum has perhaps the most comprehensive collection in the West.
