At 35 years of age, Jessica Chandler is a single mother with a new business. She lives with her daughter, Tracy, in a little backwater community on the Georgia coast, Tybee Island. She works evenings at John's Seafood Diner to help fund her daughter's college education. A failed marriage, and a recently failed relationship has put her personal life on the back burner until Tracy, now a senior in high school, embarks upon her college career. Tom Knight, once a promising college physics student and now a construction worker, travels from Atlanta to assist in building a school in nearby Savannah. Jessica comes to know Tom through a chance encounter by way of Tracy. Immediately evident to Jessica is Tom's prodigious intellect, but what lies beneath his quiet and reclusive nature is a mystery.
