Sonic, Tails, and Dr. Robotnik return in "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" for the Sega Genesis. This retro release is a milestone in the series as it was the first game to features Knuckles the Echidna. Rather than the hero who Knuckles is known to be, he is one of the antagonists in this Genesis game. When Robotnik's flying ship crashes onto Knuckles' home, Angel Island, the doctor convinces Knuckles that Sonic and Tails are the enemies. Throughout the course of this five-hour adventure, you will battle Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik through six zones, and each zone contains two levels. It is rated as suitable for all ages from kids to adults."Sonic the Hedgehog 3" provides similar gameplay as previous video games in the franchise. Play as either Sonic or Tails, and you'll jump and dash through each level. Speed is the name of the game, and these levels are built for you to run fast. Each of these stages is three times larger than the stages found in past Sega Genesis "Sonic" games, and you'll find an assortment of enemies to fight on each level, ranging from robotic fish to giant gorillas. Rings are scattered everywhere in "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," and collecting 100 rings awards you an extra life. If you get hit, you'll lose all of your rings. It'll be game over if you get hit twice. Hidden throughout each level are secret bonus stages, and you could gain a Chaos Emerald when you complete the stage. Once you have all the Chaos Emeralds, you can change into Super Sonic, granting yourself new abilities."Sonic the Hedgehog 3" plays similar to previous "Sonic" Genesis games. It also possesses an array of new features. Sonic and Tails have all of their moves from "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" along with new interactive powers, including Tails' ability to carry Sonic while flying and to transport the hedgehog to a new location. There are also new items in the game. The duo can pick up shields that absorb one hit from an enemy. These shields have special abilities attached to them, such as the Flame Shield that can turn Sonic into a fireball. He can also safely stand in fire without taking any damage. This title was the first "Sonic the Hedgehog" game to incorporate cutscenes between each zone. This Sega game also features a multiplayer mode called Competition mode, which allows two players to race in five different zones. Each zone has its level design patterned after a zone in the game. The music in this Sega title is excellent and is the work of over seven composers. Michael Jackson even helped to compose some of the music featured in this Sonic game.This title is a historic landmark in this franchise due to its introduction of Knuckles. It also features fun gameplay, a fantastic soundtrack, and jaw-dropping visuals.
