Reviews
Praise forThe Last Dickens "Pearl's latest literary historical mystery aligns perfectly with his two previous works, the widely applauded Dante Club (2002) and the equally esteemed Poe Shadow (2006); like its predecessors, the novel is a brilliant, exciting thriller exactingly set in past times and involving mysterious aspects of the lives of famous writers. This compelling yarn opens with ayes, mysteriousscene set in 1870 India, in the wilds, when a mounted policeman invokes the name of Dickens while chasing a robber. Zoom off to Boston on the same day, when a clerk at a publishing house, who was sent to take into his own hands, for his boss, the advance sheets of the next installment of the recently deceased Charles Dickens' novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood, is run down by an omnibus on his way back to the office, and the pages go missing. This situation necessitates the publisher's going to England to attempt to ascertain how Dickens intended to end his novel. Just what do the seemingly disparate parts of the story have to do with one another? What the publisher becomes embroiled in, in London, is far more complicated than simply manuscript detection. A whole world of life-and-death nefariousness awaits both him and the reader, who will be well rewarded. -- Booklist Praise for Matthew Pearl "Matthew Pearl is the new shining star of literary fiction." Dan Brown, author ofThe Da Vinci Code "Breathes such life into the genre that the term 'thrilling' genuinely applies." Gregory Maguire, author ofWicked "[Pearl has] prodigious command of mystery and intrigue [and is] at the very forefront of contemporary novelists." Caleb Carr, author ofThe Alienist Praise forThe Dante Club "Sparkling with erudition . . . Put[s] his life's work on the line in melding scholarship with mystery. He does justice to both." The New York Times "Ably meshes the . . . literary analysis with a suspenseful plot and in the process humanizes the historical figures." People (starred review) Praise forThe Poe Shadow "Breathes refreshing life into the genre by returning to first principles." The Washington Post "Life may be stranger than fiction, but Matthew Pearl is adept at portraying the mystery in both." The Boston Globe From the Hardcover edition., "A rousing yarn of opium, book pirating, murder most foul, man-on-man biting and other shenanigans-and that's just for starters.[The Last Dickens is] a pleasing whodunit that resolves nicely, bookending Dan Simmons's novelDrood (2009) as an imaginative exercise in what might be called alternative literary history.-Kirkus "Just what do the seemingly disparate parts of the story have to do with one another? What the publisher becomes embroiled in, in London, is far more complicated than simply manuscript detection. A whole world of life-and-death nefariousness awaits both him and the reader, who will be well rewarded."-Booklist "Well executed and tightly controlled…extremely clever."-Los Angeles Times "Pearl's plot is ambitious and satisfying, involving a murder and a missing manuscript, the opium trade, the emerging publishing business In New York and Boston, and the predicament of single, divorced women in America in the 19th century. Fans of Dickens will appreciate Pearl's literary allusions and his thoroughly researched characterizations…"-Milwaukee Journal Sentinel "Strongly recommended… Pearl enriches his story through an in-depth knowledge of Dickens's career and literary works."-Library Journal, Praise for Matthew Pearl "Matthew Pearl is the new shining star of literary fiction." Dan Brown, author ofThe Da Vinci Code "Breathes such life into the genre that the term 'thrilling' genuinely applies." Pearl reopens one of literary history's greatest mysteries, in a tale filled with the dazzling twists and turns, the unerring period details, and the meticulous research that thrilled readers of bestsellers "The Dante Club" and "The Poe Shadow.", In his most enthralling novel yet, the critically acclaimed author Matthew Pearl reopens one of literary history's greatest mysteries. The Last Dickens is a tale filled with the dazzling twists and turns, the unerring period details, and the meticulous research that thrilled readers of the bestsellers The Dante Club and The Poe Shadow. Boston, 1870. When news of Charles Dickens's untimely death reaches the office of his struggling American publisher, Fields & Osgood, partner James Osgood sends his trusted clerk Daniel Sand to await the arrival of Dickens's unfinished novel. But when Daniel's body is discovered by the docks and the manuscript is nowhere to be found, Osgood must embark on a transatlantic quest to unearth the novel that he hopes will save his venerable business and reveal Daniel's killer. Danger and intrigue abound on the journey to England, for which Osgood has chosen Rebecca Sand, Daniel's older sister, to assist him. As they attempt to uncover Dickens's final mystery, Osgood and Rebecca find themselves racing the clock through a dangerous web of literary lions and drug dealers, sadistic thugs and blue bloods, and competing members of Dickens's inner circle. They soon realize that understanding Dickens's lost ending is a matter of life and death, and the hidden key to stopping a murderous mastermind.

I would DEFINITELY purchase from this seller again. Seller might want to add more pics and better description because there was a tear on the back dust jacket that wasn’t mentioned. Could’ve happened during shipping so I’m not holding it against the seller. I fixed with tape on the inside of jacket. No harm/no foul. The seller had a more than generous price for this book + free shipping. NO complaints. Hence, I would purchase from this seller again without hesitation.
