Synopsis
The unprecedented rise and fall in silver's price during 1979-80 resulted in charges of market manipulation against the Hunt brothers of Dallas, charges that led to a lengthy trial and a guilty verdict. In this book Jeffrey Williams, who was an expert witness in the actual trial, focuses on the economic analysis used at the trial, the relationship of that analysis to the attorneys' arguments, and its effectiveness before the jury. Manipulation on Trial draws broadly applicable lessons from this important case. Through a series of essays, it investigates the elusive definition of manipulation, the difficulties of interpreting statistical evidence, the imprecision in calculating damages, and the hazards introduced when economic analysis enters complex litigation., The unprecedented rise and fall in silver's price during 1979 and 1980 resulted in charges against the Hunt brothers of Dallas of monopolization and market manipulation, charges which led to a lengthy trial. This book focuses on the economic analysis used at this trial. Drawing upon interviews with the judge, jury, attorneys and expert witnesses (the author having so served), it investigates the elusive definition of manipulation in sophisticated markets, the difficulties of interpreting statistical evidence, the imprecision in calculating damages, the hidden assumptions behind inferences concerning intent, and the hazards introduced when economic analysis enters complex litigation. The author concludes that these problems induce courtroom procedures to oversimplify the economic analysis and cause the law on market manipulation to be created retroactively. Yet the failure lies not with the legal institutions but with the futures exchanges who had not developed in advance the rules to minimize large-scale trading during the unusual price moves., This book is the first economic analysis of the Hunt silver case, the biggest manipulation case ever brought to trial. Drawing on interviews with the judge, jury and attorneys, as well as his own experience as an expert witness, the author focuses on the economic analyses used at the trial and investigates the problems introduced when economic analysis enters complex litigation.

- e***u (283)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Mes pasadoCompra verificadaThe listing was for a hardcover version of this book; however, I received a paperback. The Seller replied quickly to my question about this issue and issued a full refund - and let me keep the book. So, a diligent Seller for sure - and well packaged and reasonable timing on shipping. Thank you for the refund, and as you suggested, I'll likely donate this volume and seek the hardcover.
- e***n (392)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Últimos 6 mesesCompra verificadaGreat transaction, exactly as described, packed well, and promptly shipped on August 6th. Unfortunately the U.S. Postal Service took 23 calendar days to deliver the book. It was shipped from Pennsylvania, to Atlanta, past Alabama to Texas, enjoyed several days in Texas, then to Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Florida, back to Atlanta, finally to Birmingham, and Huntsville. The seller was very responsive and I decided it was interesting to see if/how the book would arrive. - a***a (419)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Mes pasadoCompra verificadaThis 2DVD set is in perfect condition. Cover art and case like new. Both DVDs played with no flaws. Description was listed as “Good”; I would describe it as “Very Good”, basically Like New. Delivery was super fast and packaging was excellent. The DVD case was wrapped well, then put in a cardboard envelope that was sturdy and hard to open (this is NOT a negative!). I have purchased from this company a few times and have always been very satisfied. Prices are great.
