Synopsis
Explores the romantic and daring age of passenger steamship travel to and from Chicago, Milwaukee and other Lake Michigan communities., This book, Passenger Steamships of Lake Michigan, will explore the romantic and daring age of passenger steamship travel to and from Chicago, Milwaukee and other Lake Michigan communities. The first chapter, 'Birth of an Industry', will deal with the westward expansion that fueled the growth of passenger steamship travel on Lake Michigan and the many early steamers that conveyed their human cargo to and from communities on the lake. The second chapter, 'Steamship Lines' will include the stories of the major steamship lines serving Lake Michigan communities, the routes of travel and the impact of the steamships on commerce. Travel brochures and advertisements for Lake Michigan passenger steamers will also be examined as important to understanding and appreciating this lost industry. Chapter Three will look closely at 'The Passenger Experience' ...life aboard ship during days or even weeks of travel across the lakes in route to Milwaukee, Chicago or other ports. From recreation and dining, to coping with storms and the motion of the ship, life on a passenger steamship presented interesting conditions for the passengers. Some were business people or those traveling to visit friends or family, others were wealthy vacationers headed west; still more were immigrants on their way to a new and challenging life on the Midwestern frontier. Accounts from personal journals of the period will be drawn upon to shed light on this by-gone travel experience. In Chapter Four, 'Excursion Steamers' the book will examine the 'day trip' phenomenon that carried hundreds of thousands of sightseers and picnickers to scenic Lake Michigan destinations during the fair-weather months. Tourism notes, personal accounts and an examination of the famous Eastland disaster will accompany pictures of excursion steamers and passengers. The excursion steamer Eastland capsized while moored at a Chicago dock in 1915 claiming more than 844 lives and is one of America's most shocking maritime disasters. Chapter Five will look at the lives and stories of the daring sailors, engineers, captains and crews that made their livings by risking their lives on the often violent and unpredictable freshwater sea. Additionally the designers and engineers who masterminded the ever more ambitious steamships will be examined. Chapter Six will look at how the needs of a nation at war affected the passenger steamships of Lake Michigan, some of which were pressed into military service. We'll also look at the shipbuilding industry on Lake Michigan and how it was affected by the wars as well. Chapter Seven is dedicated to 'Lost Steamers'. Tales of passenger steamships lost on the frigid and unforgiving waters of Lake Michigan. Included will also be survivor stories and photographs of ships that survived terrible gales as well as those that did not survive. The book will wrap up with an eighth chapter entitled, 'End of an Era' in which will cover the last of the passenger steamers and the advances in other forms of transportation that brought an end to the era of passenger steam ships on the Great Lakes., From the arrival of the first steamship to Lake Michigan in 1821 through the turbulent booms and busts of more than 130 years, passenger steamers of this bygone era provided an essential link for immigrants, excursionists, businesspeople and leisure travelers. On offer were dining, dancing, day trips and luxurious shipboard settings, but mishaps like storms, fires and shipwrecks were a persistent danger to passengers and crew alike. Through fascinating tales and splendid images, Lost Passenger Steamships of Lake Michigan presents the romantic and sometimes dangerous story of a vanished industry that once connected communities all long Lake Michigan's shores., From the arrival of the first steamship to Lake Michigan in 1821 through the turbulent booms and busts of more than 130 years, passenger steamers of this bygone era provided an essential link for immigrants, excursionists, businesspeople and leisure travelers. Every book as described, but better as the condition is like new, but the recipes are awesome. Bought these to get the recipes I had years ago from my Grandmothers on both sides of my parents. These are the same recipes I have that are so worn from use & some have just faded from time . Thank you very much for having these at such a great price , they will be handed down in time . Fast secure shipping & great packaging so greatly appreciated. Recommended seller!

5 stars for the seller! I actually did not receive the package due to USPS deciding to not deliver it, not leave a slip as to where to pick it up, and loosing the package all together. Dinarbart’s Bazaar was very helpful on tracking the package and reimbursing everything. Great seller!
