"This is a tour-de-force from an enormously gifted writer. In quickly sketched chapters McCarthy depicts a mysterious early-twentieth-century shipping disaster--the weather, the moguls, the greed, the ads, the hundreds of working people setting out for a picnic who ended in a makeshift morgue. The second half of the book brilliantly tracks the legal maneuvering and the murky trial that ultimately exonerated the crew, government inspectors, and the owners. Ashes Under Water is prodigiously researched and richly imagined. McCarthy's vivid images kept bringing me back to our own contemporary society with its increasing disparity between the middle class and the powerful rich."--Jeanne Murray Walker, author of The Geography of Memory, "From the Chicago River, Michael McCarthy has dredged a tale previously lost amid Chicago's flow of corrupt politics and Industrial Age greed. Thanks to McCarthy's extensive reporting and clear prose, we now know exactly how and why this fascinating story was willfully obscured and long buried. McCarthy has done not only American history a huge favor, he's given voice to the hundreds of unfortunate souls who so tragically lost their lives at the hands of a powerful few."  - David Mendell, author , Obama: From Promise to Power   "This is a tour de force from an enormously gifted writer. McCarthy gives this little-known Lake Michigan tragedy a thorough and compassionate telling and covers the media frenzy and indictments that followed. . . .Plentiful notes and a lengthy bibliography provide opportunity for further study for those interested. Ashes Under Water is carefully researched yet compelling told and combines the appeal of famous historical figures and places with everyday men and women struggling to survive. In this thoughtful treatment, the Eastland's story will deservedly capture the sympathy and imagination of diverse readers.

Synopsis
Ashes Under Water is the riveting untold story of the 1915 sinking of the SS Eastland , a Lake Michigan excursion boat, which rolled over while tied to its dock, within feet of one the busiest intersections in Chicago's famed Loop District. Horrified morning commuters watched it all unfold. The final death toll would not come for weeks but would be 835 people, including 21 entire families . The trial would make national headlines and cause public outra≥ the effort to bring the guilty ship owners to justice was thwarted by future star lawyer Clarence Darrow. Darrow defended the only true hero of the ship, engineer Joseph Erickson, whose wealthy bosses laid all the blame at his feet. A national disaster and tragedy, a courtroom drama, corrupt businessmen and Chicago politics, and a story of the cost of America's industrial might all in one gripping story. Author Michael McCarthy takes the reader back one hundred years to the one of the most shocking accidents in American history. But the aftermath and cover-up just may have been even worse., It was the summer that broke America's heart. In 1915, Chicago commuters were horrified to see the SS Eastland, a massive LakeMichigan steamship, flip over while tied to its dock. More than eight hundred poorfactory workers and their children drowned. Twenty-two whole families perished. Thenation cried out for justice. Drawing on previously unpublished evidence from theNational Archives, Ashes Under Water is the untold story of a mysterious industrialatrocity and how the prosperous, guilty Eastland owners tried to shift the blame to thewhistleblower and one true hero on the ship, Engineer Joseph Erickson, a workingclass immigrant. Against all odds, an attorney down on his luck at the time thenstepped in to save him: Clarence Darrow, the future legal star. A national tragedy, Chicago politics, corrupt businessmen, a courtroom drama all woven into one spellbinding narrative. Author Michael McCarthy takes us back one hundred years to one of the most shocking accidents in American history. But the aftermath and the cover-up just may have been worse.", The untold story of the worst disaster on the Great Lakes in U.S. History. On July 24th, 1915, Chicago commuters were horrified as they watched the SS Eastland, a tourism boat taking passengers across Lake Michigan, flip over while tied to the dock and drown 835 passengers, including 21 entire families. Rockefeller, Morgan, and Carnegie had bought into the ship business in the Midwest, creating a boom market and a demand for ships that were bigger, longer, faster. The pressure-filled and greedy climate that resulted would be directly responsible for the Eastland disaster and others. As dramatic as the disaster was, the subsequent trial was even more so. The public demanded justice. When the immigrant engineer who was being scapegoated for the accident was left out to dry by the ship's owners, penniless and down-on-his-luck Clarence Darrow decided to take his case. The defense he mounted, which he was too ashamed to even mention in his memoirs, would be even more shocking., The untold story of the worst disaster on the Great Lakes in U.S. History. On July 24th, 1915, Chicago commuters were horrified as they watched the SS Eastland, a tourism boat taking passengers across Lake Michigan, flip over while tied to the dock and drown 835 passengers, including 21 entire families.

Item arrived on time. Seller shipped book in envelope with no reinforcement- so book corner was bent. Unknown if book was as described due to shipping carrier carelessness. Book also appeared like it was packed with dirt or dust? (Again- likely a shipping carrier issue.) the book is a gift for someone and I know they like recycling for books. Probably fine.
