Synopsis
Here, collected together for the first time, are over one hundred exquisite drawings that Blahnik makes at the outset of the design process. These sketches are executed with such exuberance and deftness that they have become as sought after as the shoes themselves (they often fetch up to $15,000.00 at charity auctions). Inimitable in style, the drawings, beautifully reproduced in this book with special inks, vividly convey Blahnik's unique vision. Whether it's a Grecian sandal designed for Galliano, with a snake-like strap slithering up the calf, or an emerald- and bead-fringed satin mule, the seductive attention to detail in the drawings conjures up the shoe itself. Illuminating introductions by Anna Wintour and Michael Roberts explore why Manolo Blahnik's shoes inspire such passion, and these are complemented throughout the book by the words of admirers including Suzie Menkes, Donatella Versace, and David Hockney. Michael Roberts also contributes a photographic essay showing Blahnik at work in his studio, making sketches, preparing the wooden lasts, and supervising the production of his shoes at his factories in Italy. A final "scrapbook" section includes Manolo Blahnik's own photographs of family, friends, and inspirational places., Manolo Blahnik's shoes inspire fanatical devotion. Diane Von Furstenberg has hundreds of pairs; Paloma Picasso has been a fan since she was fourteen; Bianca Jagger, Anna Piaggi and Kate Moss are fellow addicts. His career begin in 1971 when he showed his sketches to Diana Vreeland, legendary editor of American Vogue . Admiring one particularly whimsical drawing of a shoe that crept up the ankle and became entwined with ivy and cherries she said, 'You should do shoes.' And so he did. Here are over one hundred and twenty of the exuberant, colour-rich sketches that Blahník makes at the outset of the design process, executed with such verve and deftness that they have become as sought-after as the shoes themselves. Inimitable in style, beautifully reproduced in this book with special inks, they vividly convey Blahník's unique vision. The foreword by Anna Wintour, Editor in Chief of American Vogue , and contributions by André Leon Talley, Editor at Large of American Vogue , Michael Roberts, Fashion Editor of The New Yorker, and Anna Piaggi, Creative Consultant of Italian Vogue , provide valuable insights into the man behind the shoes. These are complemented throughout the book by the comments of a host of admirers including David Bailey, Suzy Menkes, Mario Testino and Sarah Jessica Parker. For anyone who has ever coveted a pair of 'Manolos', or indeed has the slightest interest in fashion or draughtsmanship, this book is destined to become a classic., Diane Von Furstenberg has more than eighty pairs; Paloma Picasso has been a fan since she was fourteen; Bianca Jagger and Kate Moss, to name just a few, are fellow addicts. For three decades, Blahnik's sense of the theatrical wedded to the finest materials and superlative craftsmanship have held the fashion world spellbound, and his creations have graced the catwalks of great designers from Yves Saint-Laurent to Isaac Mizrahi to John Galliano. Here, collected together for the first time, are over one hundred exquisite drawings that Blahnik makes at the outset of the design process. These sketches are executed with such exuberance and deftness that they have become as sought after as the shoes themselves (they often fetch up to $15,000.00 at charity auctions). - e***u (282)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Mes pasadoCompra verificadaThe listing was for a hardcover version of this book; however, I received a paperback. The Seller replied quickly to my question about this issue and issued a full refund - and let me keep the book. So, a diligent Seller for sure - and well packaged and reasonable timing on shipping. Thank you for the refund, and as you suggested, I'll likely donate this volume and seek the hardcover.
- e***n (392)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Últimos 6 mesesCompra verificadaGreat transaction, exactly as described, packed well, and promptly shipped on August 6th. Unfortunately the U.S. Postal Service took 23 calendar days to deliver the book. It was shipped from Pennsylvania, to Atlanta, past Alabama to Texas, enjoyed several days in Texas, then to Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Florida, back to Atlanta, finally to Birmingham, and Huntsville. The seller was very responsive and I decided it was interesting to see if/how the book would arrive. Thanks, Joe
- 0***g (380)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Últimos 6 mesesCompra verificadaExcellent purchase. Was able to get all three items from the one seller. Seller was able to bundle all three items together into one package. Items as described and arrived in perfect condition. Good communication around shipping and tracking as items delayed and not able to be delivered by original estimate. Thanks to shipping updates I was able to track the items arriving before the extended delivery time. Thank you for making these items available on EBay.
