"This book addresses topics relevant not only for our understanding of literary forms in early modern Spain, but for all those critical periods that forced a reconsideration of human forms of identity. ... The texts chosen for analysis are ideal, both for their literary importance as for the editorial impact they had when they were published. Ruan's theoretical approach can also be considered adequate, since the network of concepts Bourdieu weaves around "habitus" and "capital" allows for the consideration of the individual and social dimensions most influential in the construction of identity. Most importantly, perhaps, is the emphasis on a number of mechanisms and types that underscore, from the early modern period to the social and technological revolution we live today, that the construction of identity is both individual and social. Ruan successfully analyzes how these early modern forms of identity are produced and developed." -- Revista Hispanica Moderna "This is a solid study, informed by social theory and by the work of an eminent group of Hispanists. The operative juxtapositions are revealing and rewarding. By judiciously navigating similitude and difference, Ruan expands and enriches the parameters of social and literary history." -- Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, This is a solid study, informed by social theory and by the work of an eminent group of Hispanists. Synopsis
Píiacute;caro and Cortesano have been traditionally viewed as antithetical figures representing a strict spatial metaphor between center and periphery. This book challenges that view by positing a relationship between these two significant figures and their respective books, picaresque narrative and courtesy manual. The handbook of conduct tacitly engages the question of identity by offering a model for fashioning the self, while picaresque narrative explicitly reflects on how identity is constituted and sustained. The book argues that pícaro and cortesano rely upon a range of shared cultural, social and symbolic resources to fashion, maintain and enhance their identity and position., Pícaro and Cortesano have been traditionally viewed as antithetical figures representing a strict spatial metaphor between center and periphery. The book argues that pícaro and cortesano rely upon a range of shared cultural, social and symbolic resources to fashion, maintain and enhance their identity and position., In this book on the relationship between pícaro and cortesano, Felipe E. Ruan argues that these two cultural figures are linked by a shared form of deportment centered on prudent self-accommodation. This behavior is generated and governed by a courtly ethos or habitus that emerges as the result of the growth and influence of the court in Madrid. Ruan posits that both pícaro and cortesano, and their respective books, conduct manual and picaresque narrative, tacitly engage questions of identity and individualism by highlighting the valued resources or forms of capital that come to fashion and sustain self-identity. He places the books of the pícaro and cortesano within the larger polemic of early modern identity and individualism, and offers an account of the individual as agent whose actions are grounded on objective social relations, without those actions being simply the result of mechanistic adherence to the social order., In this book on the relationship between p caro and cortesano, Felipe E. The listing was for a hardcover version of this book; however, I received a paperback. The Seller replied quickly to my question about this issue and issued a full refund - and let me keep the book. So, a diligent Seller for sure - and well packaged and reasonable timing on shipping. Thank you for the refund, and as you suggested, I'll likely donate this volume and seek the hardcover.

Great transaction, exactly as described, packed well, and promptly shipped on August 6th. Unfortunately the U.S. Postal Service took 23 calendar days to deliver the book. It was shipped from Pennsylvania, to Atlanta, past Alabama to Texas, enjoyed several days in Texas, then to Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Florida, back to Atlanta, finally to Birmingham, and Huntsville. The seller was very responsive and I decided it was interesting to see if/how the book would arrive. Thanks, Joe

Excellent purchase. Was able to get all three items from the one seller. Seller was able to bundle all three items together into one package. Items as described and arrived in perfect condition. Good communication around shipping and tracking as items delayed and not able to be delivered by original estimate. Thanks to shipping updates I was able to track the items arriving before the extended delivery time. Thank you for making these items available on EBay.
