Synopsis
In 1969 Prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi was handed the most difficult case of his career. A multiple murder with eight victims, ten defendants five of whom were young women between the ages of nineteen and twenty-one, and no motive. As he later explained, it is not the prosecutor's duty to provide a motive but with a case this unbelievable it became necessary. From the bones of disjointed stories told by followers of Charles Manson, Bugliosi put together the story of Helter Skelter - the idea that the crimes were aimed at starting a race war which would lead to Armageddon. But does that theory hold up? Half way through the trial the prosecutor discovered that Charles Manson had shot and presumably killed a Black Panther prior to the crimes. The idea that these crimes had been committed merely to cover up this supposed killing became a real possibility. But Bugliosi was half way through a trial where he was straining his credibility to the limit - there was no way he could change course at that point and hope to win the case. And so he continued with the theory of Helter Skelter. To his credit Mr. Bugliosi won convictions, but an unfortunate side effect has been the transformation of Charles Manson into a mind-controlling guru and a mystic person of interest. Susan Atkins undertook this dialog with the hope of undermining both the myth of Helter Skelter and the undeserved attention this case has been given over the years. It was her intent to demystify these crimes and to show them for what they were - a terrible series of mistakes that led to the tragic and irreparable loss of eight human lives.

The book was exactly as described and arrived quickly. The only problem is a recurring one with this seller and other similar sellers - the book is poorly packaged in a plastic envelope and gets heavily bumped in shipping. I would like to see the books wrapped before shipment, but I understand this can't be done for cost reason. Luckily it isn't an expensive book, and I will continue to purchase basic books from this seller. A+++++

Positive experience but could be better. Item description was accurate but, it was shipped in a simple bag with no carton or any protection. The bag was broken in places and the USPS bent the book like it was a newspaper and ruined what was an excellent looking book. That was clearly the USPS fault but a "Do Not Bend" or carton would help next time. Otherwise accurate description, value, condition and Fast shipping. I'm a returning customer and will keep buying from World of Books
