The Psychonauts game for the Sony PlayStation 2 immerses you in a world of action and adventure. Overcome dangerous obstacles and test your reflexes in this quirky platformer. The story of Psychonauts revolves around the character of Raz, a gifted young psychic and the son of a circus performer. The game follows him as he works to become an operative with a highly classified intelligence organization. To complete his studies, Raz must enter the minds of his classmates and help them overcome an assortment of personal issues. This includes diagnosing and treating mental illness and coming to terms with agonizing childhood memories. After entering a subject's mind, players will experience the same emotions and thoughts as the subject during the game. Use Raz's special powers to solve object-oriented puzzles and eradicate potential threats. The subject's brain does not want Raz's help. Instead, it erects barriers and hostile figures to keep Raz from entering the brain's subconscious. Help Raz to complete his mission by using the powers of invisibility, mind control, confusion, telekinesis, and psychic blasts. Psychonauts lets you unleash a barrage of mental energy against hostile brain guardians. As you progress through the game, you can obtain new psychic abilities and upgrade old ones. Each character's mind also contains a figment of the imagination, which can improve your overall psi rank. The player can assign up to three of these psychic powers to buttons on the PS2 controller or choose them individually from the selection screen. The Psychonauts game for the PS2 takes place in Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, which doubles as a secret training camp for mentally gifted children. Raz, as an outsider, must save the camp's children from the nefarious plans of the demented Dr. Loboto. The game features more than 10 mental worlds in addition to the real world camp level. Each world contains a distinctly trippy aesthetic. One world features a nonstop dance party while another is based around the Battle of Waterloo. Each of the worlds ends with a boss battle that finally resolves the character's emotional problems. Players will have a limited number of attempts to complete the world. Should your health be depleted, Raz will be transported back to the last checkpoint. However, if your astral projection items run out, you are ejected from the subject's subconscious, and you lose all your progress in that world. Psychonauts for the PS2 is the brainchild of designer Tim Schafer. The game is made under the umbrella of his development studio, Double Fine Productions. The game is particularly noted for its sharp and clever dialogue, which was written by Tim Schafer and Erik Wolpaw, a scriptwriter on Portal 2. Featuring a cast of flamboyant and quirky characters and a charming, humorous story, Psychonauts won the BAFTA Games Screenplay Award in 2006. Thanks to its addictive gameplay and utterly unique aesthetic, Psychonauts is an underappreciated classic game for the PlayStation 2. You can also play it on certain backward-compatible models of the PlayStation 3. This PS2 version of the Psychonauts game is rated T for Teen because it features cartoon violence and minor language. This game is also available on Xbox, Xbox 360, PC, and PS4 platforms.
