ENZSO is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files. ENZSO features former members of the New Zealand rock band Split Enz backed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. ENZSO includes: Peter Scholes (conductor); Neil Finn, Tim Finn, The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Split Enz always flirted with classical music and ambitious arrangements, especially in their early days, so it doesn't take a great leap to rework the songs in symphonic form; Enzso, under the direction of Enz keyboardist Eddie Rayner, finally fuses the two worlds properly. Where most projects of this nature seem to only have value as a curiosity, this one works extremely well -- the songs, as they should, stay the focal point and, with the added coloring of new, fuller arrangements, rise to a new level. Rather than sticking to just the obvious hits, the track selection seems to be based more on which songs would be most appropriate in this setting. For instance, "I Got You," the band's best-known song, is absent to make room for the beautiful "Stuff and Nonsense" (this time with Neil Finn taking the lead rather than Tim) as well as early songs such as "Stranger Than Fiction" and "Time for a Change," epics that touched on neo-classicism in their original form. Outside of Australia and New Zealand, where the band has become a part of the culture, this album is mainly for the group's diehard fans. [Enzso (Tribute) was also released with a hidden bonus track.] ~ Chris Woodstra
