Created to capitalize on the success of GODZILLA, the Japanese film series GAMERA mines similar monster-movie territory with the rampaging exploits of a giant, flying, firebreathing turtle. The ULTIMATE COLLECTION presents three classic GAMERA films from the 1960s, which feature a far fiercer version of the reptilian beast than do the kid-friendly 1990s updates. The black-and-white debut GAMERA THE INVINCIBLE (1965) introduces the monster when a nuclear explosion in the Arctic awakens the prehistoric turtle from his slumber in the ice. In the second film of the series, 1966's WAR OF THE MONSTERS (aka GAMERA VS. BARUGON), Gamera meets his match in the form of a dinosaur-like creature that emits freezing vapors from his mouth. And in the fourth film of the series, 1968's DESTROY ALL PLANETS (aka GAMERA VS. VIRAS), Gamera is brainwashed by aliens for their own nefarious purposes.
