Synopsis
This classic in the literacy literature is back in print to reach the new generation of teachers who need to understand phonics, but probably were never taught about them in school. Through a historical presentation of the relation of English phonics to spelling, writing, and reading (this book) brings to teachers and reading researchers insights into the importance of phonics in education over several centuries. ""The Roots of Phonics"" follows the evolution of English phonics through the change wrought in it by centuries of diverse speakers, ensuing standardization, and the progression of different forms of phonics instruction (from the first edition). This is a classic in the field (Marcia Henry based her thesis work on it) that has gone out of print due to the acquisition of its original publisher. While Miriam is no longer active in the field, she participates in IRA, IDA, and SSSR. Bringing this book back to publication will introduce a whole new generation (many of whom were not taught to read using phonics) to this necessary resource. It has not really been updated since the last edition, other than a new foreword, a new note to the reader, and some new exercises that Tara created., Through a historical presentation of the relation of English phonics to spelling, writing, and reading, this book brings to teachers and reading researchers insights into the importance of phonics in education over several centuries., To teach phonics effectively to children learning to read, education professionals need a deep understanding of the nuances and complexities of the English language. That's why this highly influential classic is more important than ever. A book that shaped the work of the most respected and prominent literacy experts, The Roots of Phonics is finally back in print to enlighten a new generation of professionals--many of whom have not had phonics instruction themselves. Through this clear and concise history of how modern English phonics developed, readers will trace the evolution of familiar language concepts: the alphabet, syllables, vowels and consonants, spelling, pronunciation, punctuation marks, and more. As readers uncover the "big picture" of phonics and the forces that shaped it, they'll learn fascinating facts such as why our alphabet has 26 letters what sparked the phonics vs. whole language debate how Spanish, French, Dutch, Native American, and other languages influenced the development of American English what phonemes, graphemes, and morphemes are, and how they relate to each other how the invention of movable type affected writing and spelling why British spellings faded from American English how different pronunciations take hold in different regions of the country More than a history lesson, this landmark book strengthens readers' understanding of the English language and illuminates the longtime importance of phonics in education--critical insights they'll use as they help children learn to read. A must for the library of every education professional, SLP, and researcher who works to promote children's literacy., To teach phonics effectively to children learning to read, education professionals need a deep understanding of the nuances and complexities of the English language. - n***7 (310)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Últimos 6 mesesCompra verificadaReceived the DVD set as listed, and the used discs are in great shape! I doubt I'll be shopping for new discs much now, with sellers like this one and another I recently bought from, why buy new when the used discs work perfectly? Great price too. Set was mailed promptly, in a padded mailer with tracking. Good seller, will shop again.
- h***1 (191)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Últimos 6 mesesCompra verificadaBook is exactly as described and even better condition. Looks like brand new. Arrived 4 days before promised date, well packaged and perfectly safe. I shopped around and this was, by far, the best price. I highly recommend not only this hilarious book, but also this Ebay seller.
- s***s (11)- Votos emitidos por el comprador.Últimos 6 mesesCompra verificadaThe package was shipped here fast, and the CDs were in good condition, but the case got stuck to the pamphlet inside. The seller did tell the truth in saying it was acceptable as was described, and he chose a good price for this, as it is 2 CDs that are almost 15 years old.
