The illustrations in this attractive book convey most of the information: large photographs of apple trees loaded with ripe fruit, close-up shots of apples, and pictures of children enjoying the fruit. New readers will appreciate the brief text, simple vocabulary, and large print. Extremely simple, easy-to-read sentences describe the stages of harvesting, from the apples' first appearance on the trees to farmers picking them to making them into a pie. The bright photographs largely feature apples in addition to fresh-faced, smiling children enjoying cider and candy apples.Rating: 4: Recommended, with minor flaws., One of six in the "All About Fall" series, this colorful book uses large photos, minimum text, and repetition of words and phrases to support emergent readers. The story discusses the harvest of apples in fall and some of the ways we use apples. Is their anything tastier than a ripe crunchy apple, perhaps baked apples with honey or maple syrup, or perhaps a warm apple pie? The notion that apples are sorted by "flavor" rather than kind seems odd, since it suggests apples are tasted then sorted, but perhaps young children will not notice. The book supports National Science Foundation standards for early elementary students earth and life science studies. A glossary, an index, word count, and sources for further study plus safe Internet sites are included., These three titles were designed to support national science standards related to changing seasons. Each one is vividly illustrated with large, excellent-quality photographs that complement the simple two to three lines of text on each spread. Apple Harvest has irresistible images, some larger than life, and lightly explores growing, picking, and eating this fruit. Scarecrows showcases whimsical creations: "Scarecrows look like people. They wear shirts and pants stuffed with yellow straw." Animals features engaging images of bear, squirrels, bees and other animals affected by the changing season. Each book has a glossary, table of contents, and index, plus suggestions for further reading and Web sites, providing emerging readers an introduction to these valuable tools. Kids will be drawn to these books because of their strong visual appeal.
