The globalization of pharmaceutical patenting has inspired significant controversy, with concerns expressed by international organizations, civil society activists, and academics about the implications of for access to medicines and health in developing countries. Yet while the global changes have been extensively studied and debated, we know little about countries' responses to the new international environment and why countries have adopted different forms of compliance with the new international imperative to grant drug patents. This book offers systematic comparative analysis of the political economy of pharmaceutical patents in Latin America, focusing on the region's three largest economies (Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico), showing persistent diversity across countries over time. The analysis focuses on the ways that changing social structure can enable or encumber political leaders' efforts to construct and sustain supportive coalitions. In doing so we see how international events can reconfigure domestic politics.
