"This book offers an engaging and practical guide for parents and educators, and a delight for anyone interested in sharing the pleasures of mathematics."--Lunar and Planetary Information Bulletin "Out of the Labyrinth will delight readers with its engaging exploration of mathematics. It will allow students, parents, teachers, and others to wrestle with the accessible mysteries of math- and discover their inner math genius."--Lunar and Planetary Information Bulletin "Out of the Labyrinth rejoices in the serious play of mathematics and explains how to think about math as a truly common pursuit... This beautiful book - full of fun and full of the wisdom of a lifetime of teaching - is so deftly done that by the time the Kaplans tell us that "math is our other native language," we believe them utterly." -- Barry Mazur, Gerhard Gade University Professor, Harvard University "I found the book to be a provocative guide to the beauty and glory of mathematics with many excellent suggestions on how to communicate this to others, written by two masters of the art. I enjoyed the sections the most where I agreed with them the least. It challenged every prejudice I had developed about the subject." -- Benedict Gross, Leverett Professor of Mathematics and Dean of Harvard College, "This book offers an engaging and practical guide for parents and educators, and a delight for anyone interested in sharing the pleasures of mathematics."--Lunar and Planetary Information Bulletin "Out of the Labyrinthwill delight readers with its engaging exploration of mathematics. Synopsis
A moving, comical, and eye-opening story of young women fighting for education and self-determination against the backdrop of women's suffrage. At Cambridge in 1896, the school's first female students face economic difficulty, romantic and political distractions, and the jaw-dropping prejudice that blights every aspect of academic life. Premiered at Shakespeare's Globe in Summer 2013., Who hasn't feared the math Minotaur in its labyrinth of abstractions? Now, in Out of the Labyrinth , Robert and Ellen Kaplan--the founders of The Math Circle, the popular learning program begun at Harvard in 1994--reveal the secrets behind their highly successful approach, leading readers out of the labyrinth and into the joyous embrace of mathematics. Written with the same wit and clarity that made Robert Kaplan's The Nothing That Is an international bestseller, Out of the Labyrinth offers an engaging and practical guide for parents and educators, and a delight for anyone interested in sharing the pleasures of mathematics. The Kaplans begin by describing the state of modern math education--the lockstep acquisition of "skills," "number facts," and "mad minute" calculations. Instead, they argue, math should be taught as the highest form of intellectual play, an endeavor to be explored and enjoyed by children (or adults) of any age. One by one, they dismantle the many barriers to appreciating mathematics, from the self-defeating belief that mathematical talent is inborn, to the off-putting language of mathematics, to the question of why anyone should care. They show, for instance, that mathematical ability is not a matter of inborn genius, but of doggedness and attention. Even Einstein admitted that "I know perfectly well that I myself have no special talents. It was curiosity, obsession, and sheer perseverance that brought me to my ideas." Enhanced throughout with puzzles, practical equations, and colorful anecdotes from their own classrooms, Out of the Labyrinth will delight readers with its engaging exploration of mathematics. It will allow students, parents, teachers, and others to wrestle with the accessible mysteries of math--and discover their inner math genius., Who hasn't feared the math Minotaur in its labyrinth of abstractions? Could not be happier with this purchase. Always concerned about shipping electronics or anything fragile but this was perfect. Extremely well packaged, fast shipping (although FedEx had a minor 1 day delay), shipping price and communication was exceptional. Would definitely purchase anything from this seller, thank you so much !!

Shipping was fine, value was there for a loose cart of a 3 year old game, and it was in the box as described. But the packaging was terrible, just wrapped in a see through bag with a bit of padding? No paper envelope or nothing around this cartridge even though it’s about the size of an SD-card is insane to me. Other than that good purchase.

In my 25 years of audio purchases, I have NEVER seen such quality packaging. Grills removed, surrounded by wrap and boxed separately, drivers covered with cardboard and gaffer tape, speaker corners protected with styrofoam. ASTOUNDING job to ensure I received my fairly priced item as described. I was truly impressed, so much that I'll follow their sales from now on. It is SO VERY RARE to get items shipped properly. Hats off to this seller. Sincerely, one happy customer.
