The Nikon D D3100 14.2MP is a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera that is available with an 18-55mm lens in the AF-S DX VR kit. The Nikon D3100 increases the megapixels to 14.2, up from 10MP in the previous Nikon D3000 model. The camera has a 3 inch LCD monitor with a resolution of 230,000 dots. The camera can shoot both raw and fine JPEG images, has a socket for connecting a Nikon GP1 GPS unit, uses a CMOS optical sensor, and includes Image Sensor Cleaning. Image Sensor Cleaning uses air flow control to reduce the accumulation of dust on the image sensor components, which keeps images clear. The D3100 DSLR features 11-point autofocus with 3-D tracking, and the ISO range is from 100 to 3,200. The Nikon D D3100 14.2 MP also has video recording capability. The video camera is capable of recording high definition movies in 1080p, 720p, or WVGA. The Nikon D D3100 14.2 MP has an Enhanced Guide option on the setting dial. Choosing this setting brings up a menu of 13 setting options within the guide mode. These settings simplify the camera exposure settings so that complex lighting and speed conditions can be captured easily. The camera has a 3-inch color LCD screen that can be used to frame shots and to view when focusing. This feature makes the Nikon D3100 work more like a traditional digital point-and-shoot camera, and eliminates the need to view subjects through the viewfinder. This digital camera is compatible with SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. The AF-S DX VR 18-55mm zoom lens that comes with the AF-S DX VR kit has vibration reduction image stabilization. In addition to providing zoom focus, the AF-s DX lens will focus on close-up shots as short as 0.9 feet. The Nikon D D3100 14.2 MP combines a fast start-up time and continuous autofocus with a quick shutter release speed so that spontaneous action is never missed. The automatic rapid photo mode will capture three frames per second, and the Scene Recognition System automatically adjusts the camera to the ideal settings. The Nikon D3100 DSLR offers standard, neutral, vivid, monochrome, portrait, or landscape picture control settings. These are image adjustment presets that give an added level of control to capturing photos. The Nikon D3100 DSLR also has Active-D lighting that adjusts detail when subjects display drastic shadows or highlights. The camera has a built-in pop-up flash and features in-camera editing so that effects and adjustments can be made using the color LCD screen. There is also a built-in HDMI port that will connect the camera to an HDTV to preview photos or to watch recorded video. The camera also has a USB connection port to connect the unit to a computer. The AF-S DX VR kit adds an 18-55mm zoom lens that will also take photos as close as 0.9 feet. The Nikon D D3100 14.2MP records HD video and has a full-color LCD screen for previewing, framing, and editing shots and reviewing photos and video. These features make the Nikon D D3100 14.2MP DSLR camera a user-friendly option for stepping up from a point-and-shoot digital camera.
