Synopsis
During the late 1950s and early 1960s, most of the countries in Central and Sub-Saharan Africa gained independence from their respective colonial power. Architecture became one of the principal means by which the newly formed countries expressed their national identity. Parliament buildings, central banks, stadiums, convention centers, universities and independence memorials were built, often to heroic and daring designs. Modernist, and often futuristic, architecture reflected the aspirations and forward-looking spirit dominant at that time. Economical boom enabled sophisticated construction methods while the tropical climate allowed for an architecture blending inside and outside, focusing on form and expression of materiality without the requirement of insulation or heating. Architecture in the capital cities of countries such as Ghana, Senegal, Kenya, Côte d'Ivoire, or Zambia still comprises some of the finest pieces of 1960s and 1970s architecture. Yet they have received little attention so far and remain to be re-discovered. At the same time, these buildings exemplify also the difficulties, contradictions and dilemmas these countries experienced in their nation-building process: Many of the architects came from European countries, sometimes even from the former colonial power. Could, therefore, the formation of a new national identity through architecture be therefore described as a projection from the outside, or did a post-colonialism play a major role that is hence exhibited in the architecture of that period? Were projects such as the Kenyatta International Conference Center in Nairobi or Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire's new capital, modernistic grand projects advancing a country, or rather vanity projects resulting from Big Man policies? Did these buildings help to establish a national culture of design and formal expression, were they embedded in a common national idea, or did they stand in isolation from the people? This pioneering new book investigates for the first time the relationship between architectural production and the individual nation-building processes in Ghana, Senegal, Kenya, Côte d'Ivoire, and Zambia. These countries were primarily chosen on the merits of their architectural culture. The selection also reflects the editor's aim include examples from all of Sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal in the West to Kenya in the East and Zambia in the South, all sharing also certain level of political stability at the time, and to concentrate on the two main former colonial powers Britain and France. Historically, the focus is on the most "active" years of independence (1957-1964). Finally, choice of countries reveals considerable discrepancies between the respective independence processes and post-colonial policies, as well as in the architectural production that can be observed. African Modernism investigates for the first time the relationship between architecture and nation building in Ghana, Senegal, Kenya, Côte d'Ivoire, and Zambia. It features around eighty buildings with brief descriptive texts, images, site plans and selected floor plans and sections. The vast majority of images, commissioned especially for this book, is contributed by celebrated Dutch architectural photographer Iwan Baan and Alexia Webster, a South African photographer much recognized for her reportages (published by The Guardian and the NYT, among other media). Their photographs document the buildings in their present state. Each country is portrayed in an introductory text and a timeline of historic events. Further essays on post-colonial Africa and specific aspects and topics, also illustrated with images and documents, round out this outstanding book. With contributions by Zvi Efrat, Hans Focketyn, Till Förster, Manuel Herz, Julia Jamorzik, Hannah Le Roux, Léo Noyer-Duplaix, Ingrid Schroder, The late 1950s and early 1960s saw a large number of central and sub-Saharan African countries gaining independence, and one of the key ways in which they expressed their newly established national identity was through distinctive architecture. Parliament buildings, stadiums, universities, central banks, convention centers, and other major public buildings and housing projects were built in daring, even heroic designs--markers of the bright future these nations envisioned after independence. African Modernism is the first book to take a close look at the relationship between these cutting-edge architectural projects and the processes of nation building in Ghana, Senegal, C te d'Ivoire, Kenya, and Zambia. Presenting some seven hudnred color photographs by celebrated photographers Iwan Baan and Alexia Webster and insightful analyses of the interactions of architectural innovation and developing national political and social cultures, African Modernism will be of interest to historians of architecture and Africa alike., The late 1950s and early 1960s saw a large number of central and sub-Saharan African countries gaining independence, and one of the key ways in which they expressed their newly established national identity was through distinctive architecture. Item as described and arrived on time. Good value. The book was wrapped tightly in a thin plastic shipping sleeve, but in transit, this was thin enough that it tore in some places to expose the book, but book still arrived in pretty good shape.
