The Thought of You, his debut as a leader, was co-produced with Derrick Hodge. Bilal Oliver (another schoolmate), Gretchen Parlato, and Nikki Ross all make vocal appearances. Hodge and Brown obviously share a love for the classic Blue Note quartet and quintet sounds of the late '50s through the middle '60s: tight, crisp, clean.

NotesDrummer Otis Brown III impresses on his debut solo album, The Thought of You. Brown makes room for Jazz, Hip-Hop, Gospel, and a cover of Canadian Country singer Shania Twain's "You're Still the One" featuring vocalist Gretchen Parlato. The album opens with "The Way (Truth and Life)," which features a muscular horn arrangement, Robert Glasper's unmistakable touch on piano, and Ben Williams' driving bass. Bilal lends vocals to "The Thought of You-Part 1," a track that includes incisive trumpet from Keyon Harrold. The spotlight is on singer Nikki Ross for a Gospel medley drenched with Shedrick Mitchell's organ.
